with の本質的なイメージ ― 何かを伴っている
with は本来「何かを一緒に持っている、伴っている」ことを表す前置詞です。道具を手にしている（with a knife）ように、何かが付き添っている状態が基本の意味になります。
ここから、どのような「様子・状態」を伴っているか→様態・方法（with ease／with difficulty）、どのような「気持ち」を伴っているか→態度・感情（with confidence／with pride）、何を「話題として」伴っているか→関連・言及（with regard to）、どんな「目的」を伴っているか→目的・意図（with the aim of）、というように意味が広がっていきます。
