「on the basis of」「on duty」「on time」…。
机の上の本(a book on the desk)や壁の絵(a picture on the wall)のように、物の表面に接している状態が、もっとも分かりやすい例です。
土台に接して支えられている→基盤・基準(on the basis of/on average)、行動のよりどころとなるものに接している→理由・動機・条件(on account of/on purpose)、ある時点にぴったり接している→時点・タイミング(on the verge of/on time)、ある活動に接している→活動・従事(on duty/on business)、ある状態に接している→状態・様子(on hold/on trial)、ある人の側に接している→立場・主体(on behalf of/on one’s own)、というように整理できます。 on the other hand や on earth のように、意味が固定化した慣用表現も多くあります。
