at の中心イメージ ― ある一点を指す
at は「時間や場所のある一点を指す」という中心イメージで捉えると整理しやすい前置詞です。時計の針が指す一点(at six o’clock)や、地図の上の一点(at the station)のように、時間の一点と場所の一点が基本の使い方です。
値段や程度を「目盛りの上の一点」と捉える at(at least/at the rate of)も、このイメージで整理できます。このイメージをもとに、時点・時間(at first/at once)、場所・位置(at the top of/at home)、程度・割合(at least/at best)というように整理できます。
代償・犠牲(at the cost of)、状態・様子(at a loss/at ease)、反応(at the sight of)、様態・方法(at random/at will)のような at の表現は、中心イメージから無理に説明せず、表現ごとに覚えるのが効率的です。
なお、「急な知らせで」を表す表現は、アメリカ英語では at short notice ではなく on short notice が一般的です。
